History:

In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program to display images in grayscale on monochrome screen. Called Display, the program draws the attention of his brother John Knoll, then employed at Industrial Light & Magic. It is recommended to make an image editor in its own right. T. Knoll takes six months off to work with his brother on the program, which becomes ImagePro2. Later in the year, T. Knoll renames the program Photoshop (photo studio). Then he works with the scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of a film scanner, rare and expensive device at the time. A total of about 200 copies of this manière3 has elapsed.
During the same period, J. Knoll goes to Silicon Valley to present the program to Apple and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. Both are very enthusiastic and, in September 1988, Adobe decided to buy the license for distribuer2. J. Knoll will work on plug-ins in California and T. Knoll will remain in Ann Arbor, waiting for the source code. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 on Macintosh4.

Description :

Photoshop has its own file format (psd extension). This allows to keep separate the different layers forming the image to manipulate them separately. The program also supports import and export image files in common formats (extensions: gif, jpg, tif, png, etc..).
It offers:
a system for sorting and organizing files for the application of an operation on multiple files simultaneously;
drawing tools in bitmap mode: paintbrush, pencil, geometric shapes ...;
selection tools work areas (or areas of interest): lasso, marquee, selection by color range ...;
tools for copying, pasting and duplication of work areas;
manipulation tools layer: by stacking area charts and use transparency and other effects, we can construct the equivalent of complex photomontages;
tools for manipulating the color palette: palette changes, color settings, brightness, contrast, saturation ...;
filters to apply various effects to areas of interest: textures, shadows, edge enhancement, emboss, blur, etc..
